I'm sure you've heard about it. I, for one, would welcome the proposals to simplify the tax codes. Eliminate most of the current allowed deductions, reduce the overall tax rate so that it mostly balances out, eliminate the GW tax cuts completely. We can't afford them.
On SS and Medicare/Medicaid: Raise the retirement age - we're living much longer, more productive lives than we did in the 1930/40s. Finance well visits to the doctor in Medicare and Medicaid - finance everything that promotes health rather than financing treatment after the fact. That goes for health care in general. Actually, reward healthy behavior. Sure, we do need the catastrophic illness safety net, but if we focus on prevention rather than treatment, it will be much less expensive in the long term. Of course, the insurance lobby won't stand for that kind of approach.
Rather than giving this report partisan lip service, let's look at its merits and see what we can do.
