Thats because MS is a software seller - Apple sells hardware, the software is sorta like, side salad, that goes with the meal kinda thingy.
If you upgrade on every OS cycle Apple doles out, and upgrade your hardware accordingly when required, I think the comparable costs just about even out in the long run. Apple's way just feels more affordable.
This applies on consumer and small business level, I believe.
