The CVS store which I visit all the time they have only one cashier. If the line gets to 4 deep she calls for extra cashiers. When the line goes down they go back to stocking or whatever, leaving the only one cashier, when the line gets 4 deep, its wash and repeat.
Simply they have no one standing around
I don't think Lowes has self check out here, well the last time I was there. Home Depot has 3 stations and yes they to have a person standing there, assuming thats more for security reason.

Still have to intervene with the SCO terminals in order to keep things working smoothly. I also have a standard register for those who are computerphobic and for unusual transactions that the SCOs just can't do. Keeps me busy enough.
I hav never gone though the sell check outs and I also wen going through the drive through bank, I don't use the lines that have vacuum deal that sucks the money up through the tub to the teller. I want the hands on with the teller. Just me.
Then again I use online banking for almost all of my banking. I normally write just tw checks each month.
