Are you saying that a person who does a crime scene investigation cannot be called a crime scene investigator?
Certainly not. Just CSI is a task - FBI for example is a unit.
Simply a detective or even carp can do a crime scene investigation. Only since the TV show there been a distinction of CSI - vs- ME and therefore a move to a separate specialty group of people who would perform a single task, like just gather evidence.
The CSI TV show - in real life they do not break down doors they do not shoot people and certainly do not arrest people.
