I'm on a committee at school that pays attention to IT issues, and we were told today by the head of IT services that Macs now account for about 22% of the computers that kids bring to school--and that the freshman class this year has an even higher percentage of Macs.

Your IT is slow off the mark. My numbers have been rising on who hits my "general public" web site and went past 22% months maybe a year ago. Just clicked google analytics and it is 38% Mac for last 30 days. Green Mac Blue Windows orange Linux yellow is iPhone
On my website that is going to be 99% computers in wet bench molecular biology labs Macintosh is now 62% and Windows falling like a stone at 35%.
Watching the percent increase of the Mac on both these servers over the years the molecular biology server has been about 18 months ahead of the curve. The breakdown in operating systems makes it official. Windows 7 is not being jumped on and those upgrades are stagnating while Mac 10.6 is the one that is exploding. Windows is moribund and is really not much competition to Macintosh.
The Mac is not a toy, who would have guessed? (just about everyone here.) We may all regret this when the Mac is the general commodity winner. I might have to go check out Linux.
