but maybe the ones that go in a laptop are also more compact than the ones that go in an iMac too, so more expensive to manufacture?
They are the same kind of drive, a 2.5" SSD.
On another note, one kind of cool thing is that you can have the 27" iMac shipped with both an SSD plus a standard 3.5" 7200 RPM. Unless it comes with an SSD though, upgrading to SSD by yourself takes a bit of geekery as it won't come with the SSD drive holder. Plus there is a matter of the heat sensor for the SSD, you have to fool the sensor or something like that.

That is kinda cool. One thing I don't like about the iMacs is that you're limited to a single internal drive, which makes automatic backups more of a hassle. On the other hand, the added cost . . . brings the machine up to a tower price.

But then you would need to buy a monitor. To get the same caliber as a 27" iMac display would be a bit pricey. Or go for expansion but instead buy a decent $200 monitor.
What to do what to do. I don't know, because I can't get either one at the moment.

What a bunch of fan boys. ;-) That's kind of bull if that's the reason, same price for the drive, same drive. I can't see it costing an extra $150 in time spent on a MBP BTO.
No fan boy. I don't think you understand the math. In the 13 inch MBP the base drive is just a 250GB. That is why when going to the 500GB SSD it cost more money than in the 17 inch you start with a 500 GB.
Cheaper starting drive then bigger differential. Apple is not charging anything extra if you do the math.
They have listed 256G SSDs not 500s, so it's an even trade on size for the 13". The 17" is getting a downgrade in size. There's no logic in the pricing other than squeezing and extra $100 out of the cheap bastards that are buying the low end notebook, the drives all cost the same.

Don't worry, Reboot can take it. I'll be disappointed if I don't get a decent comeback. I really have no clue whether I am right or not but this jackass isn't going to budge. ;-O
Actually, I must admit that I laughed at first. This is the kind of comment that I tend to make.... I just try to not do it in here since it's hard to see the evil smirk on my face and to know that I only mean it ....halfway.
