Any rumors as to when there will be a new release? I'm kind of chomping at the bit for one of these, but I'm not getting the current one. Thanks beforehand.

My guess: Jan-Feb 2011. Hopefully with retina display and FaceTime! I want an iPad badly, but I’m going to wait for generation 2. Something’s bound to improve, if only the cost vs. GB.

I gotta say I hope they improve the screen. Compared to the screens on the newer phones coming out its dot pitch isn't all that great.
The screen on my droid isn't the retina display, but it's dot pitch is fine enough you don't see pixels, and there's no "screen door" effect to it. After viewing it for a couple weeks now I really notice how much sharper it is than other devices.
I picked up the iPod touch last night to play some games, and put it down after about ten minutes because it was giving me a headache. Compared to the droid screen it looks blurry, not to mention tiny. I turned on my old phone to get some photos off I hadn't transferred and couldn't believe how horrible it looked.
Kind of like going from an HDTV back to an old analog set in 1980 with a bent antenna, dials missing and vice grips for your channel changer.

Couldn't disagree more! The apps for the iPad are so much nicer to use than the iPhone's. The non-native apps I have on my iPad work just fine, but there is so much more you can do with a 10" screen.
The following comparison has probably been overplayed, but it's dead on.

I've used Skype a couple times on my iPad. Works just fine. I don't see myself using the capability often, though. As poly said above …it's not a phone.
Just my opinion. Hell, I hate talking on the phone in general. Last year I used about 300 minutes. $100 a year for my goPhone is quite a steal. Might use a little more now that the wife has an iPhone.
i rarely use my iPhone any more now that i have an iPad. i mean, my iPhone is a still a phone and i still check email when sitting at a red light or something, but i end up in a wifi area at home and work and that's perfect for my iPad.
i plan to switch to a Samsung Epic (Android) and i plan to tether internet to my iPad so i can use 4G out and about on my iPad. since i can run all of my iPhone apps i have rendered my iPhone unnecessary. but i'd really like to see a front facing camera in version 2 of the iPad so it can have facetime and i can speak to my wife on her iPhone 4 that way just for the heck of it when one of us is traveling (though, iChat works, too). i'd upgrade for that on the iPad (and give my wife my current iPad).

Waitaminute. I had a phone in 1980 that was as big as a cinderblock. Why do you want to go there?
iPad: not a phone.
We use conference calls allot, most times its the best way to get quick answers from architects and engineers to field personnel. Otherwise if you go the formal paper trail (RFI) it can take weeks to get an answer. So do a conference call with all parties, get the answer, then follow up with an RFI.
Example: I could take the iPad out in the field and conference call parties that could solve a particular field problem, and provide live video or photos at the same time, this way they can see the solution rather than trying to describe verbally or written a convoluted problem.
Now the iPhone can do that with the caveat that the others need the iPhone 4 as well, for the video portion. Anyway would be nice to take a device out in the field during a conference call and say - do you guys see what I see?
I was going to reply to poly that video conference call on the iPad would rock, while on the iPhone it would be incredibly sucktacular. That is, sharing the device with several people on one end.
If the iPad did that we could have bought everyone an iPad instead of this Cisco telepresence they're currently putting in and saved a few hundred grand in the process.

@nagromme I don't see them giving the iPad a retina display anytime soon. Not only would it be expensive, but they are having trouble obtaining enough of the current displays. Not to mention, with a resolution that high I don't think the current hardware could push the pixels fast enough. I read that if the iPad got the same PPI as the iPhone, it would be in the same ballpark with the number of pixels on the current 30" Cinema display. That's nuts!
@carp I just saw "dummed down" and it threw me. I wouldn't describe it that way at all

The 16 gigger with wi-fi/3g.
The Apple store in the Chandler Mall was crazy busy today. Every table in the store had people standing two and three deep. Every machine and gadget was in use.
I looked up at an Apple clerk and said, over the table, I'll take a 16-gigger 3G to go please, and five-minutes later I was on my way out of the store.
Any word on when, if ever, Apple will allow iPad users to upgrade to IOS 4?

I want to treat myself. So think the iPad my give me a boost. As for waiting for the newer version, well, some of you know my health situation and I dont want to wait. Time is important to me.
So if the iPad inn it's state now will let me read some books, surf the web and show some of my pictures, then I think I will bite.
