so the logging out and in gets rid of the all-posts-unread syndrome. But the fix also gets rid of all notifications, so even things I haven't read are marked read. That gets nasty.

Nothing else happens. When I log out and then back in the problem goes away, but then the cookies loose track of what I haven't read yet.
