That's very odd. It does it even if you use raw HTML code.
It does it with smilies that are hosted elsewhere too. These are images from my web space at my ISP. The software must be putting returns before the first image, and then after each following image.
Just an FYI, that we have been trying to track this down, but unsure of the cause yet. Seems to be possibly a CSS from the main site overriding the forum one and causing this as it's not caused from an actual line/carriage return.
