So... I installed the most recent MS Office 2008 update, Office2008-1225UpdateEN.dmg and now none of the Office components will launch. So I tried reinstalling the update (because the alert said it hadn't installed all the components properly) - but it won't let me reinstall the update, saying it's only meant for updating the previous version!!

Now I'm waiting for my 'validation email' from the officeformac forum so I can get help, because there's no helpline I can call, it seems.

It would probably be quicker to dump the 2008 folder and re-install.

You might try removing any traces of Office prefs, files and folders, from your user's Preferences folder, but since it said it couldn't install properly it's probably something in your Office 2008 app folder.

Does Office still splatter files/components everywhere?

Not since OS 9. It does install fonts, in Library/Fonts I think it is, but they can be removed after it's done. It doesn't give you an option not to install them though. It can be a small pain if you have organized your fonts, so I make copies of the Fonts folders, and replace the original folders with the copies after the install.

So yes, it's still MS. crazy

And we know how paddy loves fonts. grin

To reinstall Office 2008, I'll have to install the original, and then install the 8 separate updates, one by one (as each has to be installed on the back of the last, since they haven't heard of cumulative patches at MS).

I'd really rather not, if I can avoid it.

Meanwhile, I have to have MS Office because some work and study files are only readable in that app, NeoOffice/OpenOffice notwithstanding. Filling in .doc forms, for example, is hell on wheels outside of MS Word.

And it didn't say it couldn't install properly - the update installed fine,as far as it was concerned. The error message is when I try to launch the apps, and says this:

Well, if you have to go through all of that, I wouldn't install the most recent "update."

NeoOffice works fine for me.

Looks like your OfficeArt.framework is truncated/corrupt.
Could be a bad file, could be errors on your HD making the file truncated.
You might be able to pull the file out of the update with Pacifist and replace it,
but with the error message I'd be inclined to check your disk anyway.

I've installed it on lot of machines. I think it's just something unique to his machine.

Paddy is unique you know. grin

I've restored MS Office 2008 12.2.4 from Time Machine (homage to the TM) - now I'm going to try reinstalling the new update after a restart, to see if there was something glitching it before. This because when I installed the latest Office 2004 update (yes, I have both) it fell over twice before working, which makes me think there was 'something in the air that night'.
