I'm coming to sympathize with folks who say that software manufacturers ought to be held liable for the damage that their apps do to people's computers. I seriously cannot believe how incredibly bad Norton System Works is! I removed it from my G4, and have just spent a couple of hours fixing my son's iBook (thank God Almighty for Almighty Alsoft! No wonder Norton packages a watered down version of DiskWarrior with System Work!!) and then uninstalling all of that Norton crap. You should have seen the report that DW gave when it finished churning through the mess that Norton had made of the poor iBook's HD. It went on and on and on. I've never ever seen so many issues fixed by DW at one time, and I've been using DW since the first version came out.

Whatever you do, do not not Not NOT install System Works. NAV 8 seems to work OK, but I'm not guaranteeing that.

And that's true too.--Shakespeare, King Lear

Odd ... I haven't run into any problems yet - and I just did a total DD and SpeedDisk of my OSX partition ... worked like a charm!

Ah well ... I'll be keeping my eyes open. Thanks for the warning!

=)

***matt

Don't use Norton with OS X. John C. Welch (renowned IT/network geek) from workingmac.com warned about it eons ago. Norton seriously fscked up this time around.

It installs kernel extensions and other wild stuff. Normally, kernal extensions are to be added only by OS X/kernal hackers at Apple.

Use DiskWarrior/PlusOptimizer and/or TechTool Pro/Drive 10.

--
I am dangerous. Agreed! Norton Systemworks has caused me the same problems as Yoyo52 encountered. Only Diskwarrior could rescue my Quicksilver.

I think it bears repeating Don't install Norton Systemworks! If you must use it, run it from the CD.

I just recieved my DiskWarrior upgrade and it tells me to install from OS 9. On the earlier versions, I just used the CD and ran the program from it. The question is this: Should I install it (after the restart in 9 ) even if virtually all my time is in X? Or, should I just do a restart from the cd and work from it when I get in a jam.

... would to be to just run from the CD - after all, you'd have to restart anyways, so what if it's from a CD or another partition?

(okay, the CD would be slower, but only marginally so under the circumstances)

=)

***matt

Here's Coursey's experience with Norton:

http://www.zdnet.com/anchordesk/stories/story/0,10738,2862263,00.html

The excuse he got from the Symantec people is a lousy one. No disk utility should hose a drive because it thinks it's found problems. I read somewhere that DiskDoctor actually replaces initial periods in file names with an underscore. I don't know if that's true, but with a Unix kernel the mere possibility of any app doing that should make the writer of the app automatically subject to 20 years hard labor.

And that's true too.--Shakespeare, King Lear
