Are there any irreversible drawbacks to publishing one's iWeb site to Mobile Me when one eventually intends to publish to another host? I've heard the servers are pretty slow but I can live with that during development. In other words because I was hoping to get some feedback from some of my fans and students on what I've done so far I wanted to put a part-complete site up on Mobile Me and then when the whole thing's ready and I need more features transfer it to another host? So my questions is does publishing a site to Mobile Me prevent one republishing to another host later on? Thanks.
Just download the files from your MobileMe space, and upload them to the new host. Of course you'll have to set up the DNS with your registrar so your domain name points to the new host.
If you're using iWeb I think it's still okay, someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I don't see any reason why it should. It's not like MobileMe owns the content, but you do, so it's your call. Also, iWeb is just iWeb, no real fancy/complicated doodahs and doohickeys to be installed on the server side like for instance WordPress does.
Further, if you have your mobileme url in the regular mobileme form, and get the actual domain name when getting the new web host, you just need to give your students the new url and you can also put a redirect on the site on mobileme.

Well, apart from HTML snippets you don't get to see the code in iWeb until you publish. To edit I was going to publish to a folder and then upload from there using an FTP client.

That's what I thought... so at that point I was going to upload all files to the new host and reduce the entire MM site to one page for re-directing, correct me if I'm wrong... OR, can one actually take a redundant site down in its entirety?

Yes. No problem there. I might leave the redirect in the old one for a short while, but OTOH if it has been only been up for testing purposes, and in your case of a small test/focus group, even the redirect may not be necessary.
Anyways, I'd advise you to try out an actual FTP client like Cyberduck. Unless, of course, iWeb won't allow the use of any other FTP client than it's own.
