Problems:
- Once the display goes to sleep the backlight will not come on again.
- While starting up the backlight will go off, but it used to come back on when I adjusted the brightness level once start up was complete.
- Now, as soon as the computer has started up it will go to sleep. When it comes out of sleep the backlight doesn't go on (old problem) but, within a few seconds it will go back to sleep. I have not been able to keep it awake long enough to open the system preferences, but it had been set to put up a screen saver after 10 min. When I started up from an OS 9 disk the backlight stayed on through the start up, but it still went to sleep as soon as the start up was complete.

My computer:
PowerBook G3 WallStreet 2
G3 300 Mhz
192 MB of RAM
New 40 GB HD
Has DVD-ROM but Lost the Decoder Card.

Notes: First two problems were evident before new HD. I'm greenme1's older sister. I don't know enough about computers to trust myself to do it. I'll check with my brother when he gets home.
If he can't do it would it be worth paying to get it repaired?

Maybe you can try this to see if it helps?

I've seen reports that resetting Open Firmware and NVRAM can cure some vexing problems that nothing else has been able to. So far, no one can tell me what those problems are, though. Here is how you do it:

1. At startup, hold down Option + Command + O + F
2. Type in "reset-nvram" , hit Return, and then "reset-all" and hit Return again. (Don't use quotes, as I have done here.)
3. To exit Open Firmware, type "bye" or "mac-boot" (No quotes).

[color:red]Listen...

Thanks, it worked! I took out and replaced both RAM chips and the processor. It then booted up like it has for the past several months. The screen will flicker on startup and then go off, but if you put the brightness up the screen will come back on.
