Hey peeps, it's Droog (droogie).. you know, the one who used to be a near-permanent MacCentral fixture? Long time no see!
I hope all are well, and life is giving everyone exactly what they expect and wish of it.
I've been looking around everywhere for something, can't find it, so I thought maybe some of the ol' buds at MacCentr, uh, I mean MacTech may have a solution, or know where I can find one.
I need a copy of OS 10.4 (Tiger), desperately! I found a copy on some pirate site, but I want absolutely nothing to do with that. I also found a copy from Apple themselves. I don't want that either... seems they want to ream me for $189.99 for a standalone single copy of Tiger! Can you flippin' believe that? I asked the guy at Apple if he was joking... I seriously thought he was. Uh, he wasn't!
Does anyone here know where I can get a copy of Tiger for a reasonable price? I have a copy, but it's a dedicated iMac copy -- cannot be used on another machine. My mom and dad need Tiger (at least) to be able to transfer files back and forth from their iPod to their last-gen CRT iMac. They don't want to buy a new computer yet... so I'm stuck trying to get a copy of Tiger for them (It's the oldest version of the Mac OS that will accept the version of iTunes they need... and still run properly on their machine).
Anyway, if someone could help I would really appreciate it. I will pay for it, but not what Apple wants... that's robbery.
Again, I hope all of you old forum chums are doing well. I've been extremely busy, with little or no time whatsoever for doing much of anything besides various forms of work the last few years. I miss posting, but, duty calls... first things first, I suppose.
I'll check back... maybe some of you are still around and can say hi, "Tiger solution" or not!
Like we don't know who Droog is, there's only one.
To make things harder for you, if that iMac doesn't have a DVD player you'll have to look for the Tiger CD installer, it comes on 4 CD's rather than one DVD, that's even harder to find.

You could make a disc image of a retail Tiger DVD, then transfer it to the iMac via a Firewire cable, a large capacity USB key drive, or ethernet cable. Then mount it on your desktop and install - if the iMac doesn't have a DVD drive.
How to get a Tiger install DVD or CDs is the question. I suspect if you asked around, you could find someone willing to share the DVD.

You can't boot from a mounted disc image though, and you have to boot from the disc to do the installation.
He could target disk mode the iMac, and then mount the iMac hard drive on another machine that is DVD capable to install from the DVD.
Like we don't know who Droog is, there's only one.
It's nice to be remembered! However, the world is probably most fortunate there's only one of me... it surely doesn't need another one!
Yeah, lucky for me the machine has a DVD player.
Thanks for the reply, Reboot. Good hearing from you! I wasn't sure how many of you long-timers would still be hangin' around. I'll try and stop in more than I have (although, that could be considered be a curse! ). I definitely miss the forum... when I'm not so busy I can actually think about something other than work.
No kidding. Nice to see you're still here too, carp! Thanks for the reply.
Stick around this time and no bloody toe photos or was that the other guy
Uhh... Unless I was dreaming and took an extended leave of mental absence at some point, I never posted any bloody toe photos... or bloomin' toe photos either! Seriously, I don't remember ever even having a bloody toe. So it must have been that "other guy".
Hey, wait a minute! Was someone named Droogie posting such photos here? If so, it was a complete and total impostor! How dare some scoundrel try and pass himself off as me! Off with his head!
Hey, Bozzz! I had to pop in sooner or later. Just wish it could have been before I needed something. Popping in only when one needs something generally doesn't count. Yet, one thing this forum never was, and that's stuffy! (Well, maybe one or two of the long- time members... but never us, huh?) j/k So I guess me popping in when I need something isn't so bad after all. Uh, is it?
I have a retail Tiger install DVD around here somewhere. Let me know if you can use it (pending that I can find it).
Well, ok then! Consider this one o' those "let you know" kinda' deals... cause I just let you know!
Seriously, I appreciate the offer, and will definitely take you up on it. Let me know if you can find it. If not, seriously, don't worry about it or stress yourself over it... I will figure something out. Even if you can't find it, the offer alone means everything.
Great to see you're still here too, MB. I don't think I remember you being in Pinellas County. Then again, maybe I'm just not remembering correctly. I used to live in Hillborough and Pinellas. Man I miss that area. That is absolutely one of the most beautiful places I've ever lived, and seen. And I've been and lived in a lot of places in my life.
I don't think there's an area there I don't care for... the whole entire TBay area has something incredible and charming going for it. Uhhgg... don't get me started on the beaches south of you, as if the beaches between Pass-a-Grille and Clearwater/Dunedin aren't beautiful enough. Between Sarasota (Longboat Key) and past Bradenton beaches (Holmes Beach) are probably some of the most incredible beaches in the world.
Your avatar/sig. made me miss that area again. I think the word "homesick" is appropriate... even though that area is no longer my home.
Anyway, thanks for the offer... I appreciate it greatly. Let me know where we go from here... whatever the outcome.

Found it. Made a copy. PM me with your address and I'll get it on its way tomorrow.
Had to go about making the copy in a round about way. Tried with Toast 9 Titanium, but that just sat there with the spinning beach ball, so I tried via the Finder with the same result. I then copied the DVD to the desktop and then burned the contents of that folder to the DVD. There is more than one way to skin a cat!
I then copied the DVD to the desktop and then burned the contents of that folder to the DVD.
I doubt that will be bootable. Even if you were able to get the invisible contents of the DVD burned, the boot blocks won't be right.
You need to use Disk Utility to make a DVD/CD master image first, .cdr, then burn that image to DVD with Disk Utility, Toast won't make a bootable DVD. Choose the icon of the original down and to the right in Disk Utility as the source.
Also, to keep things above board here, technically that's only legal to do for a backup copy for yourself, even if Apple's pricing is a total rip-off. Now if you were to sell or give him the original DVD, if it's not software you later upgraded from (it's not) that is okay.

I've made bootable copies with Toast before. I can't test this DVD since Tiger won't install on my Mini with 10.6.2 installed. I'll try the DU method, then. I know that it's technically not kosher, but Apple is making a bunch more money than any of us.

Toast 10 absolutely will make a bootable copy of Tiger, I just did it a few weeks ago for a guy here locally. I PM'd Droog about it, but I guess he's not interested.

Yep, just tried, making a .toast image in Toast 9 then burning with Toast works, but you knew that. It didn't way back in the early OS X days, but DU does the same thing so I never tried again with Toast.
http://www.macmaps.com/click WOW That site has over a million and a half hits! See the main page for more info about what you can find there. Talk about a time consuming site -- if you want to read all that stuff. Of course I'm checking it out for a spell. . .
Well, hello to you too, Kate! Still as clandestinely contentious as I am clandestine, eh? Some things just never change!
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm His real name too? This I gotta see . . . . .
Ah-ah-ahhh! No, no, no, Kate... no real name or location, this time! However, take heart... as a tribute to our long-time, long-standing "comrade-ry," I'm only protecting you, Katherine! How, you say? Well, if I revealed my true name and location to anyone here, especially you, my employers would have to have you snubbed-out. So you see, Kate, I do truly care after all!
I may give MacBozo my real info, but agents have already contacted him... he's sworn to absolute secrecy. You'll just have to spend the next few years in misery, knowing someone on the forum knows my true identity, and you don't! Sorry, Kate... I'm only protecting a long-time forum friend.
See Droog, nothing has changed, massive thread hijacking is the norm.
Wow, I see that! Kinda' warms the heart to be away from something ya' love for so long, then return, only to lend even more legitimacy to the long-standing theory, "The more things change, the more they stay the same!"
Well, I can't address it to Droogie - you know where to find him, can I?
Hey, MB... Shhhhhhhhhhhhh! Don't tell anyone, especially Kate... but I'm located in McLean, Virginia! Shhhhhhhh! PLEASE don't tell anyone... it's for your own safety!
Agents will be contacting you shortly with information on where to send that secret disk!
BTW... I (and my agents) am extremely grateful for your cooperation.
I PM'd Droog about it, but I guess he's not interested.
No, ScottyB, I'm extremely interested. MacBozo offered first, so, out of respect to long-time forum buddy-dom (I've known him a little longer than I've known you), I decided to allow him the honors first! No disrespect, and certainly wasn't ignoring you. I just wanted to see what happened on MB's end before responding. Ya' just never know... I may still take you up on your offer. After all, the "agents" may scare MacBozo away!
Seriously, thanks for the offer... it's appreciated.

Same ole, same ole, Droogie! If we knew your name and address we would indeed be wiped snubbed-out out!! One so important in high places as you always intimated you were -- well, exceptions must be made for that sort of paranoia!!
I bet you are actually a swell guy. But we were never given a chance to find out, then, were we?
Hope all is going well for you and yours. I've been exceptionally happy, beyond belief, since January 2009!!
.
Any thread worth reading is worth hyjacking. . . . .
One so important in high places as you always intimated you were...
Oh sorry, Kate... I was starting to fall asleep there! There you go again, Kate... In true, meddling [left-looning] form, you've become far more presumptuous and predictable than even I remember. My unexpected return has obviously upset your forum apple cart... again! Maybe I should start hanging around permanently again... just because I know you love and miss me so much! *SMOOCH!*
well, exceptions must be made for that sort of paranoia!!
Lol! Ahhhh... now you flatter yourself! Given the fact my brief return has so obviously placed knots in your apron strings, and snaps and tatters in your broom straws, I would be a bit more reticent in assigning paranoia to others if I were you!
I bet you are actually a swell guy.
Well, my mom loves me!
I've been exceptionally happy, beyond belief, since January 2009!!
I can only imagine. After all, misery surely loves company!
BTW, how's that long-standing Massachusetts ex-Kennedy seat, that New Jersey [ex-demagog... uh... I mean long-held, ex-DUMACRAT] governorship, and Virginia governorship (and an entire flip of the Virginia legislature as a matter of fact) working out for ya'?
I've always been amazed enough at how some people can crap in their own beds, in and of itself. What's really amazing however, is how they can also be so very content to wallow in it! And all the while looking around at others, telling them how much they stink! (An analogy I've used before, yet, one more fitting as time goes on)
But I still love ya', Kate.... carry on, carry on!
