I prefer to use an external drive for TM. Easier to grab and run with in an emergency. Also, you can edit the appropriate plist to change the backup interval. Of course, if you sleep your computer often, TM does a backup on wake. You can also do manual backups.
I have a folder on my desktop named DBU ~ for Don't Back Up, and I've set TM to ignore it. When I'm working on something huge, say an aerial map, I'll keep the files in my DBU folder, (always with a Most Recent copy in the actual Project specific folder) and just work out of it. That way I'm not backing up half a dozen copies of 75+ MB files that I'm herding into a final cut.
Small potatoes, compared that what a lot of y'all do, but the principle's the same.
