Yup, they'll fix it for $199.

So, moral of the story is: don't listen to people who say not to get a case for your phone. I don't know if it would have prevented the glass from breaking, but it couldn't have hurt.

The way it landed, right on the corner, is probably why it caused so much damage.

I feel sick right now. This will be my last iPhone. I am not going to be paying this amount of money for something that can be broken so easily.

Any hand held piece of tech can be easily broken. Ever drop a laptop?

AT&T offers insurance but you had to have purchased it within the first 30 days.

I have a great, hard-type case that has protected my original iPhone from 3 drops from about 3 feet up.

I now have the 3Gs and have the updated case and holster.
You are correct in the fact that it's a slippery lil bugger.

That's what I'm going to do. The parts cost around $19 on ebay.

I replaced my screen on a 2nd gen iPhone and it works like a charm. My son uses it as a Touch with a camera now. I use one of those rubber-like silicon protectors and I've dropped it a couple of times on concrete and nada. Plus the silicon is like super grip material. It is hard to drop it with that stuff surrounding it...looks cool too.

So how was replacing the screen? Is it as painless as it looks on youtube?

My co-worker's wife just dropped hers in the toilet. Her home button no longer works, but everything else does.

Needless to say she's gonna be out $200 as well.

Read through the comments to get tips from people that did it wrong. I guess removing the LCD screen is tricky, it can crack easily.

Oddly enough, i just ran into a person who did exactly the same thing: accidentally dropped her iPhone in the toilet -- and experienced the same result: only the Home button seemed affected ...

Perhaps the home button doesn't like latrines ;-)

I found out later that's not the first phone she's sent to the blue lagoon. Just the most expensive :|

Same thing with my Touch. The Home button is the only thing affected. I have to blow in the port to get it to work sometimes.

so far only 2 hard parts:

One of the screws holding the LCD (actually, the 1st one I tried to unscrew) was HARD to get loose. All the others were ok.

Heating up the glue to remove the glass. I only have a hair dryer, so it's taking a long time.

Got it together, but having issues with it starting up. First time, it started up just fine, but the touch screen wasn't working.

2nd time, it wouldn't go past the Apple. Not sure what to do.

Well, the touch screen doesn't work. I think it's the digitizer, which means that I'll probably have to buy another one. But this time not from ebay.

Hardest parts:
#1: getting the screws back in
#2: getting the paper off of the adhesive
#3: heating up the glue to get the glass off (not hard, just took longer than I expected
#4: putting the cables back in

The phone does boot past the apple, just can't get the touch screen to work. Reading in the comments, I noticed mine doesn't say Apple on the digitizer cable. It says APPIE. This could be the problem, since the digitizer is what makes the touch work.

Cables 1 and 2 clicked in? From the youtube link the guy says cable 1 is the touch screen.

yeah, they clicked in. #2 doesn't seem to actually click in though.

So I'm going to attempt to return the screen. The guy emailed me and asked what model I had...and I responded that since the touch screen doesn't work, I can't very well check! heh so I googled it and told him that I *think* it's MBsomething.


I ordered the part from here: http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Browse/iPhone so hopefully this time it'll work.

Parts are in...time for my 2nd attempt. Wish me luck! heh

This time it was really easy since I knew what I was doing and the glass came off a WHOLE lot easier. Putting the screws back in still was a pain, but they went in.
