I finally watched part of the keynote that Steve gave to introduce the iPad, and heard him say that the 30-pin connector makes all the peripherals that work with the iPods available to the iPad as well. But there is no 30-pin to VGA or DVI adaptor that I can find, anyway. Does such a thing exist? Can such a thing exist--is it technically possible?

Well. I did hear him say the iPad supported output to projectors ... and the only connector on the thing is the 30-pin. So we'll have to see what that turns out to be.
It would be pretty silly to be able to create Keynote shows on the thing but not be able to put them up on a screen ...
