I've tried to educate my kids about waiting to the right time to have a kid. I told them they were accident kids. So was I from my parents. I would say most are. But, I also told them most people want to have kids but end up having them before they want to. Mainly from not practicing good birth control.
Well, my education didn't work. My son only made it through high school and my daughter dropped out before graduating. Both rebelling along the way. My son ended up getting a girl friend pregnant after a heavy night of boozing. My daughter has had 2 abortions, got pregnant a third time and was told by her doctor if she had another abortion, she might not be able to have any kids in the future. So, she ended up having the baby. Cute little boy but she's worse off than I was financially. I told her to put the kid up for adoption so he could have a decent life. She couldn't do it so she's struggling with a guy who has no ambition. That's how it's gone up to now.

The size of the population in India and China (and throw in Indonesia too, for that matter, although it's a geographically smaller space) has a lot to do with the histories of those places. The population of Europe, according to Wikipedia, is around 730 million. That's significantly fewer people than live in either China or India--but you have to keep in mind that Europe managed to export a goodly number of people to other parts of the world, mostly in the New World and Australia but also to India and China and African nations galore. Now, the population of North America is around 525 million--say that only half of those folks are "European"--the population of South America is around 380 million--and say that here about a third of the population is "European." Add it up and you end up with around 1.1 billion people, very much in keeping with the population of India, which didn't get to export its folks in the way Europe did starting in the 16th century.
Now I'm perfectly aware of the silliness of what I just did, but it seems kind of odd that people of European extraction point to Asian countries as particularly culpable in the population game when Europeans are as fertile as anyone else.

Another factor is Arable & Livable Land. Population distribution is not uniform
Canada is relatively huge! But how many people want to live on the tundra? Same with desert countries, or those with huge mountain ranges, or thin rocky soil that can't support farming. In fact most of the World's Population is clustered around coasts or rivers.
Austraia is a great example... it's large enough to be considered it's own continent but 90% of those living there live along the coasts:
