I hope it doesn't turn out that my complacency is the issue here... well actually I hope it does: The last poster in this thread suggests that zapping the PRAM solves the issue.
I hadn't done that in so long, it stopped being one of the things I'd try. I just zapped PRAM and reset the NV RAM on the machine at work, so let's see what that does. I'll try the one at home tonight.
No problems so far, but I've only burned and ripped a few discs, and I haven't left a disc in when it sleeps yet either.
I am seeing this in Console though;
12/8/09 2:01:55 PM kextd[10] kextd Notice WARNING: /System/Library/Extensions: No such file or directory. A Googling says it's not a good thing to be seeing though.
I'll disconnect the new drive and see what happens sometime today.
I've had it in a week, no reboots, I've done ripping, burning, discs have been sitting in it most of the week, no problems. I don't get why the G5 I took it out of had problems, but this MDD doesn't. I have the jumpers on cable select, I have two optical drives in it.

Im guessing the third suggestion is "d00d, yr skrewed!"
It's god to know that they work in other machines. I'll probably just put these drives in some G4s and/or Windows computers and order something that works. Although --and I hope I'm not cursing myself here -- my G5 at home seems to be accepting the transplant better than the one at work.

Well, screw Pioneer.
Luckily, the old drive from this machine has no problem READING CDs and DVDs, it just can't burn them anymore. So I stuck it back in, and the other one, as you can see, is piggybacking for now.
