I heard about that just as I signed up for the service. Fortunately sign up is free and you only pay when you download a song. I wonder what Apple will do with it though?I guess we'll find out soon enough.

Kill it and take the code and people , just like what MS does
The waste of money comes in the sense they are small players - in fact I never heard of Lala ? If Apple is afraid of these small fish then really , Apple should be looking at the iTune team and fork the money in that direction ?

Apple wasn't afraid of them. They contacted Apple with a proposal for the sale. Of course, Apple now gets the technology and can incorporate it into iTunes.

It probably has nothing to do with fear, and everything to do with development and good business savvy. If you have a product you want to offer, or a new feature you want to add to an existing product (whether it's your idea or not), it makes much more sense, in many situations, to purchase a much smaller company which has already done it, bring their developers/engineers into your company and build it, redesign it, or integrate it from there, than to design and/or build it from scratch, which may require hiring more engineers in and of itself.
