At this time of year, for a lot of people it's the thanksgiving leftovers they stuff into the disposal.

Bummer - sorry I know you know better but had to ask anyway ya be surprise the calls I get on Thanksgiving day , Christmas day and New years day , most are legit but some are down right stupidity
Some calls was for garbage disposal . Over the phone i asked did you push the reset button ? "yes" did you check the circuit breaker ? "yes" Did you check if it was jammed ? "Yes" - I then drive over and turns out their kid threw in 20 pennies down the disposal most of the time it is the red reset button was never reset .
The other times are owners who just don't know how to use their digital Ranges and Ovens
What cold? I'm in sunny Florida. The unit is close to 10 years old, though. It isn't jammed. It just makes this dismal humming sound when switched on.
That sounds like a jam to me - your getting power to it , you be surprise how small an item can jam it -- Turn off at the Breaker First , use the Hex Wrench at the bottom of the disposal center - if it don't turn you have a jam , if it does turn get a new one , they last on the average 10 to 15 years so yours is close to that
