Since FW 800 is backwards compatible with FW 400 drives all you need is a cable with FW 400 on one end and FW 800 on the other. So there is no need for any sort of adapter card.

thats all well and good but I want to be able to use a firewire 800 hard drive and a firewire 400 digital audio recording interface simultaneously so I would need a card of some sort.

Unless you got a case that allowed the FW connection to be passed through. Then you would just need FW800(Mac)->FW800(HD) FW800(HD)->FW400(audio thingy)
