I have an old B&W G3 that's got a bad hard drive and in just collecting dust. I've been searching about for any hint of someone modding one with modern hardware, but to no avail. Has anyone gutted a blue and white and put Intel hardware inside? Seems you could save the Mac bios and have a fully functional Mac for a reasonable price, but perhaps I'm just poorly informed?

What exactly do you mean? Do you want to put an intel PC in it? But I am not sure what you mean about the mac bios. Macs have never used bios, the PPC ones have firmware, and the intel ones have EFI. Mac did the smart thing and skipped bios.

Yea, I am a little confused as well. But, you can def get an Intel Mobo and processor and put it inside the B&W, no probs. The OSX86project.org has alot of information about that. Or, you could buy a broken newer mac and get the mobo and processor from that. Then you wouldn't have to hack around with the OS.

I think I'll be beginning a mod similar to this (intel hardware in a quicksilver case) mostly because I've modded the case which took a long time and I don't really want to get rid of it. I have a dual 1.8ghz processor in it and a 9800 radeon card but I still only have about a 67 on xbench and I haven't done geek bench. Anyhow the goal will be to sell what I have inside the case and replace it with an ASUS or INTEL Mother board and a quad core (maybe q6600?). The biggest challenge it would seem is the size of the case. It looks like only a micro atx board (9.6x 9.6) will fit in the case and then you have to hack (or move) the DVD/CD carriage so that you can get the memory in (and still close the case)

Insanely mac is a pretty good place to go and someone did one called like rotton apple or something so search google for that and it should give you a pretty good idea of what goes into it. I'll try and do a good step by step as I screw it up, er, begin the mod.

But yes unfortunately you are misinformed as mentioned there isn't a bios transfer that you can do it's more involved.

Every computer uses a forum of BIOS (Basic Input Output System). Firmware and EFI uses input and output instructions for the hardware.

There is a patch that loads a portion of the EFI system into ram when you load up OSx86 and lets you use a legit copy of OSX. For it to work you need the correct hardware that is almost 100% compatible. I think only a handful of motherboards and CPUs will only work with the patch.

Officially, I know it's not supported. But neither was 10.2.x and it has run fine. So...any experience out there with Leopard on a similar config?

Also, would maxing the G3's RAM to 1GB be a good idea? Right now I have 576MB.
