Ah, now this is more like it! The new Mac Pro has a ton of expandability and power. I am not going to regurgitate all of the new specs as there are plenty of sites to do that for you, but I am going to talk about the key points. Better graphics- 2600xt is a great mainstream card (although they should have went with the 3850. 8800gt is a super value too. Better processors- Intel new behemoths. I like the idea that you can get one quad and upgrade to another one later. Excellent deal there. Faster Memory- the 667 in the old quad held it back big time. 800 is still slow, but better. Hard drives- Thankfully Apple got on the SAS bandwagon. Superfast hard disks!!!!!
Whats not so good. No dual vid cards!? Come on Apple, time to make some drivers already Same case, although well engineered, is long in the tooth. Why no ATI workstation graphics? They are much faster than Nvidias and cheaper. Some Bios tweaking would sure be nice.
I kinda thought blu-ray would happen on this one, wasn't last year supposed to be the year of HD?
Same case doesn't really bother me, its really well designed - maestro, didn't you put a G4 computer into a G5 case with seperated flow zones and all that and see a very large drop in internal temperatures? If it ain't broke...
Yes I did. And you are right. I'm just one of those guys who like new stuff. The Mac Pro is a great design, as were many Apple cases. I just dont want to see the G4 design repetition again. I expect more from Apple. Now that they are becoming so bloated as a company, I hope that we don't have them get too bloated (and lazy) as many other companies have.
I'm not surprised they didn't go blu ray. It sux. Its waaaaaay to expensive and buggy. HD DVD would be better as its based upon tech was have already mastered and cheaper. Maybe Blu Ray will end up winning the HD war (as far as discs go), and HD DVD will become the format to use on computers. After all, we still need some back up storage media.
you're kinda contradicting yourself ... want a new case for the sake of newness, but hd dvd cuz its what we have. Blu ray is more expensive, but it is definitely a superior technology, imo, - nearly twice the storage capacity. If no one has one, some one should put out a patent for an optical disc using a UV laser, cuz that's bound to happen in a decade or so.
I am quite surprised that we haven't seen blu-ray yet. I bet if Warner had defected a month ago we might have seen it. Also surprised about the lack of SLI or whatever its called these days. Apple are all but ruling themselves out of some markets by omitting this feature.
I keep thinking about putting my MDD into a G5 case I have. Then I might be able to fit my 6800 DDL Ultra. I'll probably never get around to it.
