I have recently brought a soho 8 port router- however when i tried to test it by plugging my modem into it and hooking it up to my computer it didn't go, lights turned on and the modem new it was connected but no net access. Any suggestions on what i am doing wrong?
Which one is running DHCP? If its the modem, then a switch would be of more use than a router. Login in to the router control panel and see what settings it has.
Try disconnecting it from the modem, then plug in your Mac. Check in your network prefs to see if you are being issued an IP address. Should start with a 192. or a 10. If it starts 169, then we are back to square one. I'm guessing all was/is fine with the modem connected straight to the mac? If thats still true, and the router is issuing IPs, then we have hit the nail on the head. You need to set the router up like a switch. That will vary from model to model. Not familiar with yours I'm afraid.
