Yep, I'm new, so I really need your help. I have an eMac 800 Mhz PowerPC G4, and it has been a bit under attack in it's life, and not from me, either. :'( I would love to modify it. Here are it's downside: the hard drive is not terribly well, and the screen is, well, most likely a result of trying to form it into something Salvatore Dalí would recognise as art. I would love to take the actual computer out of its original case, put a different monitor in, dump the sick hard drive, and make the external hard drive an internal hard drive, while still maintaining some of its original looks (white outside case, Apple symbol, the speakers, the little light, the way the dvd drive opens/ closes). Anyone of you attempted such a feat? Thank you for all of your help. Jens Meyer
hy.. hm..thats not easy to swap in another display....to swap out a CRT Display is very dangerous...so please dont DO IT or dont do IT by yourself... i have never done it..but its not easy...to exchange/or swap in your ext. HD, thats easier....but be aware of the CRT

The CRT module is actually most of the machine, and the power supply is pretty tightly integrated with it. However, it is not impossible to install an LCD if you can find one the right size. You can run it off the external video if needs be.
What about if u swapped out the CRT for LCD, and mounted the motherboard behind the screen a la iMac style. However you'd have to fabricate a new back cover and that would probably be difficult to do. Don't know how u would keep the cd/dvd drive the same tho.

http://lancej.blogspot.com/2006/01/macintosh-upgrading-700-mhz-emac.html theres another eMac hard drive upgrade guide. Im thinking, once iv got enough money, of doing the same replacing the internal hard drive with a 160GB Hitachi drive and putting in another 512MB of RAM to take me to a Gig. But good luck with this mod!

Guys, you are all brilliant! Thank you for so much help, suggestions, and sites to look at. I'll see what I can do. I will most likely post results, if I survive the operation ;D -phantastic stuff Jens
Another Idea you could do, is a case mod of changing the color or perhaps making it clear.
Use proper alcholic chemicals to remove the white paint, that would make it clear, you can then pant the inside of the shell any color you would like, OR, you could even put some logos on the inside before you paint it, or even remove them afterwards so you have some clear sections and you could install a neon or something and it would shine through the logo.
