I currently have 2 512mb sticks in my mbp core duo, and i'm looking to upgrade to 1.5 or 2gb. My dad's old Toshiba laptop was upgraded with (i think) a 1gb stick, so would I be able to use that in my mbp? and does the ram have to be matched pairs or can I use a 1gb and a 512mb?

The Core based Intel Macs prefer matched pairs, but they will run mismatched ones. Matched pairs should be faster though.
As for using your toshiba RAM, if its the right spec, it will work fine. If its older than a Core Duo/solo, the its probably wrong. Needs to be 667MHz, PC2-5300 DDR2 SO-DIMMS.

He is right, be sure its the right speed.  Two 1gb stick will do ya right.  You could run a 2gb and 1gb and even though not matched, it doesnt seem to matter much.

I'm only a core duo (32-bit) though, so aren't I limited to 2gb of ram?

And it turns out my dad actually had 2 512 sticks in there, so I guess I'll just buy a 1gb and run with 1.5 for a while...

I'm running my 1.83 MacBook Core Duo with 1.5GB of RAM, I would like to get round to upgrading it to 2GB and maxing the spec out, but I'm not sure its worth it or not for the things I do. But it does run fine and has done for about 10 months since I bought it.

I know the Mac Pros and Xerves take ECC RAM, don't think anything else supports it. Get the non-ECC.
