I have an Aluminum Powerbook that does not have the trackpad scrolling feature and would like to have it. I have read that it is mainly a hardware issue and that the powerbook can not be upgraded through a firmware fix. Is there any possible way I could buy an upper trackpad casing for a powerbook that has the scrolling trackpad and place it on the one that doesn't? I would think that since it is just a hardware issue, it would be easy enough to just switch out the casings or am I missing something that I should know about before I attempt this?
I think current trackpads use USB for connecting to the motherboard, whilst the PowerBook uses ADB, so you're out of luck. Don't take my word for it however, but you can check MacTracker (http://www.mactracker.ca) for Apple Computer Specs. See if your laptop uses USB or ADB. If it uses USB, it can most probably be done.
check out iscroll at macupdate. it will do what you want. I thought it was the g3 powerbooks that used ADB. The aluminum powerbook g4 uses USB as far as i know. But i'm pretty sure it's not ADB. remember ADB was killed long before the aluminum powerbook was even a glimmer in Jobs' eye
