I saw the Mac Mods section of MacWorld, and i really liked the Neon Genesis Mini by Adam Whitlock. I was wondering if anyone knew how he did that mod.

Hey Adam? smile

HaHa well I'm going to answer for Adam.  He didn't do anything for that mod  wink

Each of the 4 images were redone by hand in illustrator to look good in grayscale.  That work was done by a designer in Atlanta named John Williams (http://johnwilliams713.com/flash.html)

The Mini was painted by Coloware and looked absolutely amazing (http://www.colorwarepc.com)

We sent the painted mini to Universal Laser (http://www.ulsinc.com) who then engraved the design into the paint.  Thanks to the reflective qualities of the clearcote, the design is multifaceted and sometimes appears white on black when viewed from various angles.  You can very easily use a VersaLaser from Universal Laser to do this very same thing if you know someone or a store that has one (check around your custom gift shops).  However, some budget engravers won't give you much height so in order to get the sides of the mini engraved Univ Laser had to use their industrial strength machine.  The Top was done by a VersaLaser.

The mod was designed for the MacMod.com display at MacWorld Expo in January 2006.  It was a major hit.

check out the painting process outlined in the first few episodes of the pimp my mac podcast.  You can get an automotive quality paint job that way, otherwise we highly recommend the colorware guys.  They do fantastic work!

As for engraving, Universal Laser is the manufacturer and doesn't actually engrave anything.  We worked with them to showcase what their technology can do, but as a rule they don't engrave stuff.  However, when i was at MacWorld Expo I saw these guys (http://etchamac.com/) and they were etching PowerBooks.
