I have just finishing installing a raid set in my PMG5. Its putting up some terrible numbers in xbench (slower than my main disk). I have yet to test it, but here is the setup. Firmtek Sata PCI card. 2 Hitachi 80GB HDs striped to raid O with software raid. Not sure whats up. Does anyone have any ideas? This setup was much faster in my MDD G4.
So far it seems the Firmtek card is to blame. Ive tried several different drives (not in raid) and got scores in the 20mbps! I tried different slots too. Seems that either its the card or the macs pci slots. Im gonna try and see if a different sata card will work better. Ill try Firmtek and see what they think.
Well, I installed four drives in my G5 and the powersupply didnt have enough juice to power em. It worked for a while, but subsiquent boots failed. Its a shame. Mine has the 450w PS. Guess Im going to have to go outboard for the raid.
Seems it was the seritek card. I put in an ata disk and an sata disk which were both run off of the system board and it put up some decent numbers. Every bit as good as a pci sata card and set. Much better. I plan to do a hardware article on how to set this up yourself. Its cheap and effective.
