I got a great deal on a 128 Meg Radeon 9000 AGP card so I decided to finally move my MAME cabinet from OS 9 to OS X. The 400 MHZ CPU in the Sawtooth isn't cutting it. Does anyone know if I can put a Quicksilver CPU and heat-sink on a Sawtooth Mobo?
I figure I'll have to solder a couple jumpers at the least to account for the difference in the 100 and the 133 Mhz MOBOs. My biggest concern is if it will fit. If I have to cut up the case a ton or lose an IDE bus, I might just pick up an OWC upgrade.
My end goal is to have a cpu between 750 mhz and 1 ghz. I have not picked up a processor yet so any advice will be appreciated.
If I am correct, you do lose one of the ports on the side of the board. Dont overclock the bus either, that will just cause problems. I would just go with a processor upgrade from FastMac or OWC. I would love to see your MAME cabinet, put up a mod guide! -maestro
I did find something that shows me loosing the a pATA (IDE) controller here: http://www.shanescot.com/photos/bw_mod4/index.html]http://www.shanescot.com/photos/bw_mod4/index.html . I have a PCI dual channel PATA 133 card kicking around so loosing a slow bus isn't too bad. I wound;t try to directly connect a cable like the link.
I agree that overclocking the bus is sketchy too.
The guy in the article I linked to wrote "Next time I'd just spring for a GigaDesign 800MHZ 2MB L3, it would be a lot less work!" I'd love to find an older upgrade like this since OWC and fast mac only stock faster ones.
Questions:
-Can anyone explain why the guy in the site I linked to is sending 12v to the 4th post of the CPU. I'm not sure about this one... -Any ideas on where to find an older one other than eBay? - Anyone know if I will have enough jumpers on the CPU to be abler to move around or remove to adjust for the 100 mhz bus or am I going to have to order something to solder on?
I'm down with posting the cabinet once I get this upgrade stuff figured.
The post mod gives the cpu its needed extra juice. OWC sometimes has clearances on cpus, so check them out at wwwmacsales.com. They have a 1.4 on special for 250 bucks. Try some other mac stores too.
