Howdy, a quick search didn't turn this up, but if it's out there, don't beat on t3h n00b too hard.
I acquired a ATi 9600 with ironhawk back at MWSF and wanted to dump it in my Mirror Dual Door G4, but there's an extra set of pins sticking out of the card toward the front that don't slip into the second black slot, the pins overshoot it. I recall reading somewhere that I'd have to tape this pins off or something, but MacAddict Forums are down, so I can't find the article. Any pointers?
That extra plug is for ACD displays, if you dont have one, dont worry about it. As for taping pins, its number 3 and 11. I used both a 9600 and 9600xt successfully in my old MDD. -maestro
ikes. I do have an ADC display. Is there something I can build/do to stick into that existing slot and move it over to that protrusion from the card, or is the layout of the pins different?
Yes, it can be modded. You need to cut off the connector and epoxy it back on in the correct location. Next you need to solder wires from the factory card location to the new one. Its been done. It looks more like a hack than a mod, but then its cheaper than buying a convertor from Apple. -maestro

so apple actually offered a converter? what was the name of the part called?
Well I thought I posted this a couple days ago but it didn't go through. Anyways, I got ahold of a 9600 XT for cheap off of eBay. I want to use it in my quicksilver 867. I did the tape mod and all of that but when it is in the computer I get nothing. No signal to my monitor at all. And if I put my pci rage 128 card in with it, the computer boots up and recognizes only the rage 128. I do not have a G5 readily availible to test this card in (While I am convincing my all of my friends to get macs, they are alll getting laptops) So I am not even sure if this is a working card or not. I have done a lot of research but still haven't found any answers, anybody here have experience doing this sort of thing in an early quicksilver?
The tape mod can be a little touchy. If it slips off even a little it will not run your monitor. Try and re-try it. That happened to me also, so Im guessing that is it. As for the converter, Apple still sells them on their site as far as I know. Its a powerbrick with lots of wires on it. You can get them on ebay too.
Well I have taped, re-taped, and taped once again and I am still getting nothing. I did get a good deal on this card, but it is very disappointing that I can't seem to get this too work. I could really use a video upgrade. So I guess the question now is this, has anyone heard of early quicksilvers having trouble with 8x agp cards with the tape mod or should I just assume that the card is bad and try another? I have looked through strangedogs and not found a solid answer, just a couple of brief mentions. I will probably just register there later tonight and see if they know.
