well there are formatting blocks used, you have partitions maybe, you have to store the data tables, plus you have the 1024 effect as well. All of that gives you the remaining disk allocation.

Its the old 128GB size limit. Which is a consequence of the IDE controller. Most old Macs have this problem on their internal busses. MDD was the first tower without it.
