As you all know, I’m doing a massive overhaul of a 9600/200. During my initial planning phase there were several things I was hesitant about, but one definite goal was for a quieter system. Like many pre-G3 systems, the 9600 is certainly not known to be whisper quiet. In fact, when you start up, it sounds like you’re in a preflight sequence on a 747.
Aside from the HD, the biggest noisemaker was the PS. Now as we know, often times noise can significantly be reduced when turbulence/interference is removed. I quickly noticed that there were 3 (!) different layers of protection guarding the PS fan: Under a highly impeding plastic layer of slits, there was a large metal grid; Behind it, there was the protective grid attached to the actual PS. Obviously these grids all crossed at different locations, making it very difficult for the air to move freely. Taking out my handy Dremel, I quickly removed both the plastic and the grid on the power supply with the following results:

A quick startup revealed that this significantly reduced the noise level. However, the PS fan still left something to be desired.
Now for the question at hand: is it possible to replace the fan in this power supply? Can it be done relatively safely? For obvious reasons, I am hesitant when dealing with that much electricity. Any ideas will help!

Carefully remove the fan. Dont get shocked. Its happened to me. OUCH. Its probably a 80 or 60mm fan. My recommedation is to buy a matching Panaflo from http://www.newegg.com. Make sure you match the wires (if 3 get 3, if 2 get 2wires). -maestro

It's kinda hard to get shocked with a power supply. Just take a screwdriver and make the caps touch the metal frame. You should install a 80mm LED fan. That will give the mac some nice looks.
