Hey,
I am thinking about using some of Gore-Companies Archetectural Goretex fabric for waterproofing my iMac G3... Ik ik, very expencive sounding... I am wondering a few things- A= Logical? B- Where can I get it cheep? I am continuely modding this G3, and adding a more breathible, strong, and waterproof caseing would be very cool... Tell me what you think. I already sent them a question on weither or not they would sell me such a small amount...

why do you want a water resistant imac? I mean, it might make a cool mod, just curious.

Waterproof...? Perhaps you are making the infamous coffee-maker-in-the-chasis mod?

I never thought of coffee... it might be a tuff mod, cause I would need both a powerful heater, and a powerful cooler. The main reasion for doing this mod is the good 'ol just for the hell of it. I belive that iMac G3's were one of the less destroyible type Apple computers... but waterproofing would make it that much more... unique Also the old G3 iMacs are natorious for being really bad at cooling... so if I have a case that allows more airflow, it should cool faster. Plus the woven type of Goretex I am looking at trying to get is extremely fire resistant... so the perfect weird iMac mod!

I thought that in addition to being water repellent and breathable, GoreTex was very insulative, which is why they use it in ski jackets.

Wouldnt' it be like wrapping your computer in down? Wouldn't it overhead almost immediately? (Or am I wrong about the material)

Hmm... Didn't really think too much about that aspect... Though, I think if a fan is pusshing out the hot air, the fabric is pulling in new air. Its a breatible fabric, and is intended to protect the application... Though I may be wrong and the fabric might hold in way more heat then it would release...

Breathable just means that water vapor can pass through it.
Also, of note, from the wikipedia article:

"Gore requires that all garments made from their material have taping over the seams, to eliminate leaks. This requires special machinery. The fabric is not available on open market, and is exclusively licensed for specific manufacturers, to maintain the highest quality control."

Might make it hard to get some of it on your hands anyway?

If you really want only want it to be water proof, why not just, say.... wrap it in something like aluminum foil, which would facilitate heat transfer and also create an impenetrable membrane.

yes, it would be tuff... Also yeah but the stuff does let air in/out I have a coat made from it... but the gore-tex I am thinking about is a slightly diff material... idk about it... Still debating the idea, maybe a nice fiberglass case?

build a complete fiberglass case. that would be really cool.
you could make it look really neat if you are skilled with fiberglassing (or at least with building molds to shape the fiberglass strips.
not sure how ports would work if you really want it to be waterproof.
even without being 100% sealed, a fiberglass case would be really, really cool.
