I have a 350 MHz powermac G4 and i want to add an illuminated power supply to it. Which ones are safe and will work with it. The one in there now says max output 208 watts.
Or you can use you existing Power Supply cut windows in the PS case using acrylic /Plexiglas and light it up with a mini-cathode tube or multiple LEDs with your choice of colors. Might be a lil cheaper than buying a whole new PS.
RISX, good to see you on our site. I love the mods you have done. I hope you have some more up your sleeve. As for the PWR SPLY, I would buy an ATX model. The orignal Apple one in that model is looooow on juice. It will help in the long run if you plan on adding hardware. -maestro
heya maestro, thanks for the comments. Yes I have a few "mods" B-) planned, but time constraints and denero are limited at the moment :-\
True holycowfilms' stock PS is only rated @ 208-watts. If holycowfilms wants to save money and is not planning to throw a internal raided mega-terabyte storage system then he has a nice lil' PS mod project. His 208W PS may be able to handle some extra components and simple mods. As an example BlueIce G4 PS is rated @ 338W and currently has 4 12-inch cathode tubes, a dozen 5mm LEDs, 5-inch 12v LCD, 5-port usb hub, two 120GB 3.5 hard drives, 3 video cards and other modded goodness. It normally operates in a hot environment, 90-degrees F room temperature too :-\
If he is planning on doing the internal raid system or similar mega-power consumption upgrades then he can buy a el-cheapo atx PS and perform some basic or unique mods to it for extra juicy goodness.
or . . .
Some pretty sweet pre-modded beefy atx PS can be found here too:
Hi there, I came across this thread while looking for a power supply for my G4. I was not intentionally looking to make a modification, though blue is my favorite colour. My power supply has failed and Apple does not have any replacement in stock. Worried about how long it will take to get one in, I looked to the internet for alternative options and am now here. I have tried Ebay but my particular one is not listed. (G4 MDD single1.25 gigabit 360w pwr supply 661-2816) Perhaps someone has an old one they are no longer using and would like to sell? Or mabey there is an alternative one I could use? I don't have the knowledge to carry out a mod on my own, but I know someone that does. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Show your friend the site I linked to in my aboce post. It has pinouts for your MDD. Maybe he can convert a supply for you. Be wary of second hand supplies for MDDs as some of them were very noisy causing Apple to replace them under warranty. I don't suppose they replaced all of them though. And I know we have a couple of the noisy ones on a shelf in our workshop, so we probably aren't the only ones with defective units going spare.....Odd that they weren't replaced on exchange though.
i neglected to mention that the PSU in the MDD is not the same form factor as the earlier G4s and ATX cases. They are similar in shape and size to the PSU used in the Xserves. So you'll need something which will fit in the case...
