With the help of my trusty isopropyl alcohol, I made myself an icebook. I'm concerned though about leaving off the metal shield, as it looks like it acts as a thermal conductor for the CPU, since it appears to have some sort of thermal conductor on it. Anyone w/ any feedback on leaving it on/off?
If those "conductors" are white pads (thermal pads) then you need to put it back on. The metal is the heatsink. I don't dought it. The same goes for clamshell ibooks. I'm sure you could mod a heatsink for it, but if a standard style heatsink would work Apple would have done that in the first place. You may be able to remove some of the metal-maybe into an iconic Apple logo of some sort. -maestro
Not only do they act as heat shields but they also shield the airport from interference. I saw my old Dual USB ibook's airport reception cut in half by leaving out the top shield.
