Think it was more to just so that it could be done, as a way to show how versitile the linux OS is. I thought the same thing first time I saw it but its kinda cool, and I'm sure the people who did it learned a lot.

hope to make a fully functional linux from the ipod that will be able to play a greater variety of formats, have better features and even be compatible with external hardware like flash card readers so you can copy your camera photos directly to your Linux iPod
The goal is not to turn it into a pda, just run linux.
the iPod is running on architecture capable of running a full fledged OS - hence linux on iPod. what annoys me is that Apple doesn't open it up to people wanting to mod the iPod. If there were a development kit I think people would find lots of cool ways to expand the functionality. Its sad when the most advanced change you can make to your iPod is a voice recorder or media reader.
A commodore 64 online? Now thats impressive, but back to the subject... I know as a geek I love to do stuff just to say "Ha, I told you I could." so I can understand the why behind loading linux on there.
Yeah. You're right. I understand the concept of doing something to just say that it can be done. Probably the same exact situtation as the commodore 64.
By the way, for what it's worth, I invented the Internet when I was about 10. I plugged in my Commodore Vic 20 for the first time and the first thing I thought I'd be able to do was communicate instantly with other people. Boy was I sad when I found out all I could really do was this:
