I've been kind of suprised that we haven't seen any case mods for the "Giant White Marshmallow" of the desktop macs, the eMac... Looking at this, it looks like the same back-painted polycarbonate case like the iBooks use -- does anyone know if this is true? If so, it should be possible to do a paint-stripper repaint style mod such as we've seen on the iBooks...
I assume you are talking about your eMac? Take off the cover and look inside. The paint will be very noticeable. But I think that like the iBook, the eMac is colored plastic, not clear plastic that is painted from below.
There's an eMac disassembly guide out there with some pics of clear case parts from eMac. Its in japanese so you'll need a translator (Babel Fish works well enough)
OTOH that came out weeks after the eMac did. Depending on how old the eMac is there might be a possibility, but I doubt it. Apple probably moved those to solid plastics before they converted the ibooks. Of course, you could always hit it with a regular paint job and a clear coat...
Who looks at the case? My eMac was bought loaded, 1Gb DDR RAM, 160Gb HD running at 1.25Ghz and all I see sitting here is the screen. My mods come from many software companies including Apple, AphaOmega software,Unsanity and an accellerator for the web from TurboDial. This left my dock clear, some icons changed, a better menu system and efficiency all around. I did get rid of that one button mouse and went with Logitech for a Ball Mouse, Dual action game controller and Attack 3 Joystick. Add to that a powered USB-2 four port hub and a small incandescent strip light over my keyboard drawer and I'm all set. B)
Bob, we realize that the only thing you see when you are sitting in front of your computer is probably the screen. However, people do like to look at their computers when they are not using them. Also, what about other people that see them? In addition, do you see the white around the edges of the screen?
People mod the looks of a computer for a more personalized feel. Not everyone is the same.

First, when my eMac is asleep or seldom turned off there is a very nice cover with gold embroidery over the screen. This keeps out dust and improves the atmosphere in the room. I would not jeapordize the three year warrantee on this fine equipment by tearing it apart to paint it. If you think you can paint it while it is together, I think you are fooling yourself. Second when I look at the screen the only thing other than the white boarder is a small blue bug with google eyes pasted on the light beside the DVD-R CDRW door which cuts glare and hopefully is the only bug on my computer. I chose to put all my money into software and equipment, my next buy will be speakers. I am not critcizing others who would void their warrantees, just giving my opinion.
I do see where u are coming from. I am glad that you realize that people are different. Most of the people that mod their systems happen to know more than apple service techs anyway. Therefore, they can fix any mistake they make. However, they realize that it is a risk and I guess that is something that has to be taken into account. People like the customization of a computer to fit their taste. As for the comment on the cover. That sounds very nice. I am glad that it adds to the ambiance of your decor. Many people, including most mac users and modders consider the mac itself a piece of artwork and would never consider covering it. Even though it saves the computer's live . This is why modding is so popular, b/c it makes it look that much better, or fit the decor.
