My MacMini is not among those listed as needing the recent EFI update and optical drive firmware update that were needed to correct the optical drive from spinning up randomly. Mine has begun doing that. Think I should take a trip over to the Apple Discussion Forums?
What format of disc is in it? Data, movie, etc. Does it do it with all formats of discs? Did it just start with the current disc?
I know there was an update to address drive noise at startup and wake from sleep for SuperDrives, but I didn't think it was to stop random spin ups. I've seen that happen on all models, a search a lot of times causes it to spin up, so I always recommend not leaving a disc in all the time to reduce wear and tear on the drives.

It spins up without a disk in it. It just runs for a few minutes and then spins back down. None of the posted EFI and SMC updates will install - the installers state that my machine doesn't need it.

When I came home from choir rehearsal and woke the mini, it was quiet. iStat showed the fan running just under 1500 rpms. After a while, as the CPU began to heat up, the noise became quite noticeable as it spun up to just over 1800 rpms. It is still running at 1926 rpms but has quieted down. It seems that it is noisy only when it first spins up and then quiets down after it has run at speed for a few minutes.

I did the stick a CD into it and there was no change in sound even after I ejected the CD. I don't see anything unusual in Console. I do see a little entry that caused me to chuckle, though.
That is when the computer went to sleep and when I woke it.
Hmmm... is that an Intel Mini? I ask because I don't see where there is a list of computer models that require that update... just that it's Intel models. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3744
To help determine that it is the optical drive you could use this..also to help control it till you figure it out. http://discrotate.sourceforge.net/
