It's all about competition from when kids are old enough to know they want to win... but sport/smarts is one thing, looks is another. Subjective and creepy.
Mind you, when I was at work the other day, I was stuck watching TV at my service users' house and ended up seeing:
i) a kids' show called Keep Your Enemies Close where they make boys and girls compete in teams against each other, and the losers get green gook dumped on them |(and try not to cry - these were fairly little kids)
ii) some messed-up British invention called the Weakest Link which made me nauseous to watch - the quizmistress is basically revolting to the competitors individually to see who breaks down. Don't know how she sleeps at night. Don't know why they're competing, knowing that's how they're going to get treated. Oh, these are all adults, of course.
