Anyone have experience that one of these might be better than the other?

I like Pioneer drives. I changed mine out in my old powermac G5 with the Pioneer 111D.

BTW, newegg is a little bit cheaper:

Well, that's good enough for me! I just ordered two. smile

The front thingie comes off to let it fit through the door, right?

Yup, that's the only modification I had to do, which was really easy.

OK, how do I get the front panel off without breaking the tray?

I don't have a tray loading drive to look at. Will the front of the tray slip off allowing the front cover to come off? They are usually secured with locking tabs which can be depressed to release.

It comes off pretty easy. It slides up. There's a couple of clips near the outer edges. Thumbs on the top of tray, pull up on the bezel with your fingers from underneath the bezel.

Edit - I prefer to file the corners and edges if possible to keep dust out of the drive rather than remove the seal. I never have liked how Apple does that, removing the bezel that has the seal.

You have to stick a tech tool into the hole to manually pull the tray out first BTW.
