American Catholicism (and maybe European, not Vatican, Catholicism very recently) is more Protestant than it is Roman. The rub is hierarchy. Americans tend not to believe in it, but it's at the heart of the magisterium of the Church.

I absolutely agree with what Dowd wrote. I think it's a bit ridiculous though to start applying a characterization from either her column or my comments and treat it as support for a pretty specific and tremendously odd theory of the structure of the church as a whole.
The American Catholic church is going to continue to hemorrhage members and the bizarre actions of this pope are probably going to accelerate that process, no matter how many dissatisfied Anglicans they manage to attract.
