A couple of bad capacitors on the power supply. Some say it has to do with lack of ventilation and have modded the fan to run all the time. Heat kills.
When I pull out capacitors that have gone bad it really isn't heat, it's more like fire. They go up in a puff of smoke. (Luckily nothing like that happens inside hard drives. ;-O )

Your drive died. In another thread you mentioned that in your opinion you thought it was too hot at the vents at the top of the iMac, so heat killed your drive. Anecdotal evidence, unless your finger tips are highly calibrated instruments.
