I think it uses QuickTime components to play the movie. Maybe something is fubar with it. Or maybe a Perian or Flip4Mac thing. Anything comprehensible pop up in the Console/All Messages when you launch the slideshow?
I uninstalled flip4mac I reinstalled QT and iPhoto 8.1.
I noticed in iPhoto, when I select a slideshow from the list, the lightbox/bar at the top of the iPhoto screen doesn't populate. I also found, when going through the photos manually, that some black out when double clicked to put into full screen edit mode. Moreover, when a ss title is highlighted, the inventory count at the bottom of the window does not update to match the population of the selected title.
