EXACTLY why I'll most likely get another Pro... I don't want to be stuck for 5-6 years** with the same video card, or have to pile up external HDs on my desktop. I really want to take advantage of Snow Leopard and multiple core processors. With the iMac it looks like dual is the max for now.
** average life time of my Macs. My G5 was bought in 2004. 2010 IS the year !!
(other than the processor, and how often does someone do that, if ever?).
While I'm not sure how hard it would be to get at in it's enclosure... it does remove quite easily in the new MPs. See the first 2 pics in my post/link. That's the cpu beside the ram.
It would be nice to be able to upgrade the CPU on the motherboard, never tried with a Mac (well not in last 15 years). But in 3-4 years wouldn't you love to be able to switch from a 8 core to a 16 or 32 core ?
Course we'd only need a new Mac every 10 years then !!
As an FYI... if you reference the pic in the link I posted... you see the cpu pulls out with the ram on a separate board. I hear that you can pull the 8 core out and slip it into a 4 core box and everything runs peachy. So keep your 8-core box locked down.
It's not that it's too difficult, but how often does the average Mac user do it? We're probably talking about 1 out of every 10,000 or even less
I'm fairly certain my next Mac will be an iMac. I just can't justify the expense of the Pro (right now anyway) anymore. It's nice having 11GB of RAM, and I like having the extra internal HD, but an external HD on the shelf is no bother, and I'm probably not using the vast majority of that 11GB of RAM on daily tasks. I'm not one to launch dozens of apps and keep them open. And while I still work on very large images once in a while, it's not what it used to be.
