What I see more and more , in fact just yesterday but always in chrome version . Not really a case per say has no glass protection so more like a sleeve ?
I thought the new iPhone had some sort of smudge resistance on the glass?
It has some pretty hard glass as glass is not all the same. The only thing I try to do (but often fail) is not drop it in my pocket with my car keys or change. Even that happening often and I wipe the iPhone on my sleeve and the screen is shiny and not a scratch. Putting a cover on it would be a waste.
I disagree. I have big hands and the small phone is slippery as all hecl on some days. I need something a bit more tactile and grippy. Not rubbery, just more grippy than steel and glass. My 1st gen iPhone ended up in the same pocket as my keys and I ended up with a scratch.
I had this one for my 1st gen and it was great. I must have dropped my phone 5 times from about 3-3.5 feet up and it absorbed the shock nicely. Very nice craftsmanship and good grade of leather. http://www.case-mate.com/iPhone-3G-Cases...lster-Combo.asp
I am still able to carry the phone in my pocket since I'm older and not wearing skin-tight clothing like in my younger days. I use the holster on occasion.
Are they pricey. Yes. But there's nothing worse than having an expensive smart phone wrapped in a bubble gum-rubbery, dollar store-looking , chintzy wrapper
I tried commando, and lost. The iPhone survived, but barely. Never again. Went with Incase. It's low profile and slick enough to get in/out of the pocket fairly easily. As a compromise, Zagg (InvisibleShield) makes a nice clear wrap that will prevent scratches, but not much help from shock.

Heh -- commando ain't for everybody ;-)
But yeah, it all depends of how much you throw the thing around in everyday usage -- mine spends most of the time on my desk or in my pocket, so there's really very little risk of shock events ...
