After reading this, I decided even though it's very high, to buy a few more shares.

Everybody is looking forward to the Apple Tablet. Is that what's driving up the stock?

And CNET yesterday said no one will ever buy that thing - go figure

That, and Apple is about the only computer/appliance/OS making company to post better than predicted profits lately.

Sounds like a good bet for Apple. They've got a ton of cachet, and people buy that sort of stuff, even in a shock recession, and it may be the right stuff.

The radio peaked during the Great Depression. People quit goin anywhere, doin anything, but they sure loaded up on leisure consumption stuff and a little leisure production stuff (such as irons). About 65/35. As always with man, it's a helluva lot more fun to consume leisure than to produce more of it, although I guess more time to kill is a lot less enjoyable during a depression.

Another funny thing with the Great Depression. People completed the shift from home production (makin your stuff and your fun) to market production (buyin stuff).

So, stuff did move during the Great Depression. Certain things.

In 2009, man does not live by bread alone, but also by http, packets, internet, etc.

I don't really follow Apple. I'm not a Macroid. I just like their OS and hardware. I hear business is good for them, and the brand is kickin ass.

But this tablet thing might have a ton of promise. If it's real, I know I'd rather have that for my girls instead of their Leopard Lenovo S10s (more about the size, than anything, but the Windows OS sucks, of course). We got nothin to do with nothin, we're just a family with our own particulars that got nothin to do with nothin, so our druthers are nothin, signifyin nothin.

However, the 10" market is huge - It's about the only part of that PC market with any spunk. I don't know what the magic is: Size, cheap, whatever, but it's what people want. In the PC world, desktops are dead, and laptops are getting there. And most of the netbooks are junk. Few are decent. Apple generally makes good stuff.

Now, Macroids may poopoo netbooks, and Apple's done a helluva lot better doing their thing than the others guys chasing the mass market, so they don't need to do this. Apple could probably sh!t iPoops and get over.

Now, the Recession is the great terrible Sword of Damocles over any product launch (or more accurately, abandonments, delays, and bankruptcies, etc), but certain leisure consumption things thrive. (However, deceleration stopped months ago, quietly, virtually unnoticed, as reported by Intel [good indicator] and Cisco [great indicator, as their diversity is embedded across a large diverse array of economic sectors] - However, I hear that the experts at large are finally cluing in to this, of the same ilk as experts such as Bernanke and Greenspan who claimed in late 2007 that everything was contained and things were lookin up ). Of course, it'll be a while before we come out the other side, and of course housing still has a ways to go.

A lot of my friends have been out of work for some time, and they've slashed back heavily, but several have bought new iPhones. What changes with leisure consumption (as it did in the Great Depression) is that you quit paying people for doing things (such as movies, restaurants, etc) and you cut back on other frivolous stuff (such as shopping), but most still buy certain leisure consumption things, home entertainment oriented, such as (in the Great Depression, radio sales soared) iPods. People still value their leisure, even during a Depression.

Remember those old feel good black and white movies of big ol' Depression era households with these maids/jocular nannies/etc - Well, those movies were kindasorta accurate, as far as that goes. Having domestic servants was a lot more common then among ordinary folks - They were cheaper - And people were reluctant to get rid of them. One part 'they didn't have nowhere to go, and they'd become "family", and one part 'people still value their leisure time' (of course, back then, with leisure time more scarce, it was more valued).

People value their leisure time.

Stab in the dark: But I think this tablet thing could be one of those leisure consumption things that makes the grade. And it's an Apple.

I sure hope they hit a home run with this, as I like Apple tremendously, but unfortunately Apple isn't normally the kind of stock I buy.

... the insane upgrade choices Windows users will soon face ...
(I don't see an easy upgrade path for majority of XP users. I believe they're screwed as far an in-place option. Maybe a new mac is the easy option.)
