Well, not just because of the air - in the UK everything costs more... someone's got to keep MP's in the style to which they've grown accustomed and we also have to pay quite a lot for sychophants and foreigners.

It's the same in Finland as Apple went with the biggest national carrier, which also happens to be the most expensive and (IMO) the crappiest and with the worst customer service...needless to say I am not their (cell phone) customer, they are my ISP though, since up here no other ISP delivers what I need. And I don't think all Mac users are happy to be their customers either.
Their cheapest iPhone plan with 100 SMSs, 100 minutes a month, 100MB data a month etc. would be ludicrous 31,69 €/month + 159 €/8 GB or 245 €/16 GB right away. My cell phone bill is about half of that so yeah, I am criticizing Apple this stupid vendor-lock decision very heavily and NO, I am not getting the iPhone at these rates.
Maybe you're used to lower mobile rates over there. I don't have an iPhone yet but I think it's 450 minutes and unlimited data for $100 (71 € ) over here. What would a plan like that be?
Yup, and the other amounts are what you still have to pay just to get the phone, unless you go for an expensive tariff/plan.
It's a bit mad - I hardly use my landline at all, but I have to have one in order to get broadband. And O2 has yet to unbundle the local exchange, so I can't get a cheap deal with them yet - so I've got 3 different companies involved: one for the landline, one for the ISP, and one for my iphone. Once O2 does unbundle the exchange (they claim to be doing it sometime in the next 12 months) then I can use them for all 3 and get a much cheaper package for landline/broadband (I think it'll come down to 1/4 what it is now!).
