So a couple of months ago I tried cleaning the screen of my faithful 12" PowerBook when water traces started running down the face and got behind the lower seal then spread through the LED cells whatever they are causing a sort of stain on the display and for some reason smearing the pull down menus with sort of horizontal black streaks so I can't actually read them. I've been using it alright but I've got a lot of work to do next academic year including a few horrible exam oriented Windows functions dictated by work so it looks like I may have to reinvest and I'm wondering whether I should be going for a desktop Mac or MacBook Pro? I usually max out the spec on processor and RAM and I'm thinking 15" MacBook Pro for portability but would I be right in thinking that the Mac Pro delivers more arse-widening power than the MacBook Pro when it comes to running tabbed betting screens on Betfair behind my actual work? Before you give up on that 12 inch, bake it. Apple says you can store that computer in temps up to 45 C (113 F) but I bet you can go up to 55 C overnight without damaging anything.

Take the battery out and put it in the oven with a thermometer that you can read through the oven door. Lowest heat setting and let the temp get up to 55 C then turn the oven off. Let it sit in there overnight. Check the temp after an hour and if it is already room temp bring it back to 55 C then turn off again.

Just trying to get the humidity to zero while making the computer a bit hot. Do not touch the computer until it reaches room temp as you may be bummed out that the LCD has darkened. This will disappear as it cools off.

Try moving to a Drier Climate.

In your case I suggest the 15 Macbook Pro the high end , the only reason I say that is you can partition the drive for Windows for that "exam" and still have a respectable 250 GBs for both OS's

A tower will always kick a laptop's ass, but for what you're doing I'd say the MBP would be powerful enough to satisfy your addiction.

A tower is hard to carry around anyway. It all depends on your needs, if you think you'll miss the portability get the MBP. If the PBG4 has never left the house and has always been used in the same spot, you don't need a portable.

That was an interesting suggestion but I don't think it's wet anymore... I was using soap and water and I think the stain in the LCD is a sort of dried out residue.

I'm seriously thinking tower now... I need to move my work around but can prolly get the laptop from work, 'though maybe not the ideal spec... but I'm thinking iPod Touch for betting on the move... is that 3G yet?

It only has wifi, it's not a phone.

Ah, I see... I might have to think about the iPhone although O2 have got an exclusive licence in the UK meaning that it's more expensive than it should be.

Seriously though, I keep hearing rumours that phone company X in the UK is going to have iPhones too (it's usually Orange) but they're always unfounded. The amount O2 is charging for a PAYG 3GS (£440/£538) is outrageous.
